Row upon row of back to back houses are featured as well as corner shops and factories which are sure to evoke memories for generations of residents. It was also the decade when high rise blocks of flats were under construction in the heart of the community. The images are published courtesy of West Yorkshire Archive Service, which collects and looks after the unique documentary heritage of the region dating from the 12th century to the present day - more than 800 years of local history. 7. Burmantofts in the 1950s
A row of four back-to-back terraced houses on Eastwood Street separated between numbers 3 and 5 by a shared outside toilet block. Clothes hang on lines stretched across the street. At the far end of the street is Cross Stamford Street where an advertisement for Senior Service cigarettes is visible. This area was known locally as Newtown. Pictured in September 1959. On the far left of the image is Firth Street. In the gable end of the block of terraced houses are numbers 36 and 38 Cross Stamford Street. On the side wall of number 38 is an advertisement for Kellogg's sugar frosted flakes. On the right of the image are numbers 1 to 5 Firth Place, a row of three back-to-back terraced houses with a ginnel between numbers 1 and 3 allowing access to Firth Street.
