Ashley 'Chilling' Crawford called time on a professional career which featured 44 bouts in various weight categories stretching back to 1987. His 33 wins included 28 by way of knockout and featured twice winning the Commonwealth light heavyweight title. Elsewhere strike action by members of the RMT trade union brought disruption for passengers using services provided by Arriva Trains Northern. Leeds United striker Alan Smith failed in his attempt to get a four match ban for a red card at Cardiff City in the third round of the FA Cup rescinded by the Football Association.
