Leeds in December 1995 - 14 stories making the news

It was the month protesters brought traffic to a standstill in Leeds city centre.

Demonstrators from Reclaim The Streets - a collective with a shared ideal of community ownership of public spaces - put up barricades across Merrion Street. RTS was characterised as a resistance movement opposed to the dominance of corporate forces in globalization and to the car as the dominant mode of transport. Elsewhere there was outrage and anger over the axing of bus services while a new stadium heralded the dawn of a new era for sport in the city. This was Leeds in December 1995.
