John Sheridan - 12 memories of a Leeds United midfield maestro

He was without doubt the best Leeds United star never to play for the club in the top-flight.

John Sheridan was the midfield maestro who will forever remembered by a generation of Leeds United fans. His quality and talent provided a bright spark for the Elland Road faithful watching Second Division football during the 1980s. He made 261 appearances for Leeds in all competitions and helped the club reach the semi finals of the FA Cup as well as a play-off final under manager Billy Bremner. “The biggest regret of my career is probably not playing in the top flight with Leeds United," he told the YEP in an interview in December 2019. "That wasn’t to be. Getting to the first play-off final and obviously the FA Cup semi-final under Billy, unfortunately we didn’t win anything but it was a brilliant season for the supporters when times were hard." Enjoy these rarely-seen photos plucked from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of Varley Picture Agency, of Sheridan in action for Leeds United during his seven year stint with the club.
