From church bells to hand bells: Why this photo has a nice ring to it

This photo dating back to the late 1970s has a nice ring to it.

And what better place to find bell ringers than Bell Lane in west Leeds? They belonged to St. Peter's Church in Bramley.

But because the church bells were out of action owing to restoration work when this photo was taken in February 1979 they decided to take up hand bell ringing.

Pictured left to right with Mr Cox are Edward Turner, Ian Jorysz, Carol Kingston, Alison Reid, Catherine Holgate, Andrea Gorman, Ian Foster.

Two other members of the team, missing from the picture, are Tracy Ford and Anne Jorysz.

Mr Cox had been a bellringer at St. Peter's for more than 25 years.

He said the group mostly young people aged 13 to 17 - had been unable to use the church bells since July of 1978, when the church was closed for restoration.

"We decided the best way to keep together was to start to learn hand bell ringing," he said.
