It brings together a host of festive traditions to showcase how Leeds celebrated Christmas in the 1960s. Christmas decorations, carol singing, shopping scenes and fundraising appeals are all featured in this trip down memory lane. The images are a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of the West Yorkshire Archive Service, David Atkinson Archive and photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. 13. Christmas in Leeds
It was the custom of the Men's Class at Morley Friends' Adult School to raise some money for the upkeep of the building by going to member's houses on Christmas Day morning singing carols. Many of the houses were around the Clough Street area where a substantial number of members lived. After they changed location the new houses had to be fitted in. This photo from December 1961 shows the Men's Class singing outside a house on Little Fountain Street (round the back of a back-to-back) which has since been cleared in the slum clearance programme. Leeds, Horsforth, 3rd December 1968 Horsforth Townswomen's Guild bought and dressed a consignment of dolls in December 1968 for the Yorkshire Evening Post Christmas Fund. A display of the dolls helped to brighten the scene at the Mechanic's Institute, Horsforth, where the branch held its annual birthday party - the 22nd annual celebration. Pictured here with the array of four dozen dolls provided and dressed by members are four of the guild's officers, from left, Mrs. D. Midgley (ex-president), Mrs. M. Laurie (president), Mrs. L. Allen (immediate past chairman) and Mrs. M. Dibb (chairman). The branch organises a different charity effort each year and this time it was the Evening Post Christmas Fund which benefitted.
