This gallery features a number of local landmarks ranging from the Regal cinema and York Road public swimming baths and the public library through to the factory of ‘The Tailor of Taste’ and well known places of worship. Familiar streets such as Stoney Rock Lane and Nippet Lane are also in focus as well as a Royal visit. The images are published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. Nippet Lane, with a horse and cart in view in August 1930. On the left is a fish and chip shop, owned by Mr and Mrs Render, at no. 13 Nippet Lane. To the right is St. Stephen's Road with a pickle factory seen centrally. St. Stephen’s Road terminated at the quarry and premises of J & C Boyle and Sons, Brick Manufacturers, at the Burmantofts Brick Works which produced good quality every day bricks. The houses in the distance are on Torre Road, on the far side of which was sited the Burmantofts Works (Terra Cotta) which produced a fine grade of clay for use in decorative items, including the famous Burmantofts faience, and was at the time owned by the Leeds Fireclay Co. In the centre, bakers shop also selling cigarettes and sweets. This was number 62A, owner Agnes Louise Nurse. This is the junction with Doris Avenue. The shop has a blind down over the window with 'ices' printed on it. On the wall, posters for Leeds Empire Theatre, Lux soap and local cinemas, the Star and the Hillcrest. The Baptist Church on York Road pictured in October 1934. The architect was W.H.Harris, it cost £5,500 to build. The foundation stone was laid on July 10, 1872, there was accommodation for 700 people, The last service was held on July 4, 1959.
