The cost of refurbishment at Leeds City Varieties Music Hall was put at more than £300,000. The city's oldest working theatre needed 560 seats replacing, dressing rooms upgraded as well as electrical rewiring and major roof repairs to prevent damp. This was 1991, a year which featured a visit to the city by Diana, Princess of Wales and Leeds United heading into the recording studio. Francis Downing restores one of the finest treasures at St. Wilfrid's Church in Calverley in January 1991. He is watched by Canon David Sutcliffe. The restoration work was paid for thanks to a grant from the Pilgrim Trust.
