It was the year thieves targeted a landmark in the heart of a west Leeds community.

Father Timothy Lipscomb and St Bartholomew's Church in Armley was left counting the cost after thieves stole Yorkshire stone flagstones leading up to the place of worship. This was 1996, a year which also pedestrian safety improved on Stanningley Road thanks to the installation of a pelican crossing.
