Prime Minister Tony Blair visited a community centre in the heart of LS13. He was joined by the then Home Secretary David Blunkett who arrived sporting a black eye after striking his head on a metal stairwell. The pair spent about 40 minutes talking to invited guests at Fairfield Youth & Community Centre while they moved around a series of tables. After the session he told the meeting he believed the key to cracking the problems of anti-social behaviour lay in a two-track approach of long and short term policies. The year also saw the opening of a new primary school in the community as well as a recognition for a young resident who raised the alarm when his mum collapsed at home.
