This new book reveals who, what and where proved major influences for Leeds

People, places and events that have contributed to the story of the city of Leeds are celebrated within the pages of a new book.

The publication by Leeds Civic Trust features 98 Blue Plaques which were unveiled between 2001 and 2017, and includes the following subjects;

Leonora Cohen, the suffragette who famously smashed the case containing the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London.

The city’s first black headteacher, Gertrude Paul.

Yorkshire and England cricket greats Hutton and Sutcliffe – a Blue Plaque is at their Pudsey St Lawrence home ground.

Champion cyclist Beryl Burton.

Pioneering civil engineer John Smeaton.

Dewhurst Buildings – where Michael Marks and Tom Spencer conceived their world-famous business.

Landmark buildings such as the Corn Exchange, Roundhay Park Mansion, the Grand Theatre and Whitelocks Public House.

Leeds Irish Centre – the birthplace of televised darts.

Celebrated author JRR Tolkien.

Co-author Dr Kevin Grady said: “The history of Leeds – as told through its people, places and events - is a fascinating one. I hope that people will enjoy the stories we have been able to tell in this publication.”

Co-author Bob Tyrrell added: “Over the years, I have written many inscriptions on Leeds Civic Trust Blue Plaques, but a limit of 45 words means we can only ever scratch the surface.

“This book enables us to say so much more about the city’s rich history.”

Following the book’s launch on October 21, the Trust will hold a special public talk on October 26 at 7pm via Zoom, with Dr Kevin Grady as speaker.
