7. Alan Bennett
Born in Armley, Leeds, he is one of our finest playwrights and screenwriters of, to name but a few, Talking Heads, A Private Function and The History Boys.
8. Leonard Hutton
The Pudsey-born sportsman was an English cricketer. He played as an opening batsman for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1934 to 1955 and for England in 79 Test matches between 1937 and 1955. Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack described him as “one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket”.
9. Simon Armitage
English poet, playwright and novelist who was appointed Poet Laureate on 10 May 2019. He is professor of poetry at the University of Leeds. He grew up in Marsden.
