But the future of the clocktower on the former Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post offices in Wellington Street now hangs in the balance.
The site was handed over in good faith to new custodians in 2012 who promised to take into account the historic significance of the landmark which was now under their care.
However, promises to preserve the tower have not materialised and concerns are mounting, not just about the dilapidation of the site, but of the structural integrity and safety of the tower.
The site is now owned by UrbaniteLiving and Prescient Capital, and much like how the joint mastheads of The Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Posts stood together for decades on the tower, the two sister newspapers are joining forces to investigate what the future holds for the site, and its crowning glory.
