West Yorkshire musician releases suicide awareness song after brother's tragic death

Peter Steel, from Pontefract, penned the emotional track after his brother and fellow musician Chris took his own life.

Peter has regrouped with his and Chris's former band mates and has created the song, titled The Fifth Of March, which is out now.

The music video pays moving tribute to Chris, with footage of him as a child, his life as an adult and the hole his suicide left in the lives of many people who knew him.

Peter hopes to reduce the stigma around mental health with the track, particularly among men who accounted for 75 per cent of all suicides in the UK last year.

He has launched a challenge on social media, encouraging men to show the 'okay' sign to emphasise that it is okay to talk.

Some of the money raised from the song will be donated to Andy's Man Club which has supported hundreds of men across the country since it was set up.

The club was formed in early 2016 by Halifax rugby league player Luke Ambler after his brother-in-law took his own life.

Since then, the group has expanded across the country and now has over 800 men attend every week.

Peter said: “It started out as a very personal project but quickly snowballed and now I aim to raise as much awareness and money for the charity as possible to help save other people from enduring the same devastation that my family and friends have to endure on a daily basis”.

The single, Fifth of March (Suicide Prevention Song), is now available via iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Music.
