Smoking rates have fallen steadily in Leeds over the last few years, with an unexpected drop during the pandemic. Leeds City Council set out its health and wellbeing policy in 2016, looking to drive down smoking rates and improve the overall health of people in Leeds - particularly in deprived wards which have much higher rates than the city's average.
Here we reveal which Leeds wards recorded the highest rates of smoking in the city in April 2020, the latest available figures. Public health data, made available on Leeds Observatory, records the number of smokers among the GP-registered population in Leeds. This data is broken down by Directly Age Standardised Rates (DASR) per 100,000 people, which allows us to compare different wards by accounting for the varying age of their populations.
