The plans include a new multi-million pound motor neurone disease (MND) care centre, as well as two shiny new hubs to clear the backlog in patients waiting for operations in the city.
Health bosses are keen to see progress on all of the projects – some of which are earmarked for completion this year, while others will take slightly longer.
In 2024, patients can expect to see spades in the ground for new projects, while older, fading buildings will get the spruce-up they deserve.
We’ve rounded up all of the changes on the horizon in Leeds, so you don’t have to spend your time wondering when your nearest hospital’s getting the improvements you’ve been asking for.
Here’s what you can expect in 2024 –

7. More ‘research and innovation’ in 2024, says Leeds hospital boss
A new research programme will launch in Leeds in October 2024, to the delight of one of the city’s top professors. It comes as 12 ‘Regional Research Delivery Networks’ (RRDN) are set to launch across the country – and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was successful in its bid to make sure one of them was based in the city. It will mean experts can get a better understanding than ever before of the patients they serve. Professor Phil Wood, the trust’s CEO, pictured left, said: “I am delighted that we have been selected as host for the new RRDN. We are proud to have a really strong track record in research and innovation, and our aim is for every patient to be able to participate in, and benefit from, research.” Photo: Simon Hulme

8. Progress expected on plans for Chapel Allerton Hospital
In August, a planning application was lodged with Leeds City Council to create an ‘elective care hub’ at Chapel Allerton hospital – to the tune of £27m. The hub would include a new operating theatre, office and a car park, among other additions. It’s hoped this would reduce backlogs for patients waiting for operations. A decision on the plans is expected this year, but – if it goes ahead – the hub wouldn’t be finished until at least March 2025. Photo: James Hardisty
