Oxygen therapy has been around for decades and is traditionally used to treat decompression sickness in divers but it’s now being applied to wider issues ranging from stress and low energy levels, while some believe it benefits their symptoms of long Covid.

A recent study conducted in Israel also suggested that oxygen therapy can offer anti-ageing benefits by helping the blood to remove dormant cells and make way for active ones, leading to healthier looking skin. This could be particularly good news if you’ve over-indulged at Christmas or are just feeling the new year blues.

Sarah Todd runs Oxify in Leeds where you can sink into the comfort of an oxygen chamber for an hour or more and discover the benefits first-hand. “People come to us for a whole variety of reasons including problems with pain, fatigue and injury,” she explained.

“Oxygen therapy for anti-ageing is like a detox and it’s also time to yourself away from everything else and a chance to re-energise,” she added.

New year is typically the time to start afresh or try something different and Oxify is making it easier for people feeling the pinch after Christmas and beyond by offering a 25 per cent discount throughout January to customers booking a one-hour session. Just use code YP987 to apply the discount.

What exactly is oxygen therapy?

Its full name is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and there are two parts to the process which are increased purity of oxygen and higher than normal pressure.

The air we generally breathe contains 21 per cent oxygen but in HBOT that rises to 95 per cent. In addition, pressure inside the chamber increases to almost one and a half times the usual level we experience day to day.

How can it help?

According to Oxify, increasing pressure and oxygen levels within a chamber leads to oxygen-enriched blood which dissolves in the bloodstream. This stimulates and restores function to damaged cells and organs and enhances the body’s ability to heal.

What should I expect?

Ensuring a relaxing experience for customers is one of the main priorities at Oxify so people can expect exactly that. They go into the bright and spacious chamber fully clothed and can choose whether to sit up or lie down. They can read, listen to music, watch a film or let the low level of white noise simply lull them to sleep. An Oxify team member monitors the entire session as clients breathe in pure oxygen through a face mask.

Are there any after-effects?

People sometimes feel slightly light-headed for a moment or two, a bit like after having a massage, but otherwise they can just get on with the rest of their day and many report feeling relaxed and revitalised.
