Money begins to pour in for Leeds heart charity's Wear Red Day

Charity chiefs at the city's Children's Heart Surgery Fund are "buzzing" over the success of their flagship fundraiser Wear Red Day and appealed for supporters to continue sending their cash in.

The Leeds-based charity, which supports the Congenital Heart Unit at Leeds General Infirmary, is starting to see the money pour in from its annual Wear Red Day fundraiser.

While the official event was held on February 7, many schools took part on February 14 due to a diary clash with an NSPCC fundraising day.

Across the city and wider region, schoolchildren, nurseries and businesses donned red items of clothing to raise sponsorship for the worthy cause and landmark buildings in Leeds, including the Corn Exchange, Trinity Leeds and Bridgewater Place also turned red to show their support.

Andy McNally, marketing manager at the Children's Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) said last year's Wear Red Day raised £37,000 but this year's event is on track to raise more.

“Our social media channels have been absolutely buzzing thanks to the tremendous support of Yorkshire businesses, schools and individuals celebrating Wear Red Day .

“A huge thank you to everyone who took part. The money is starting to come in, and we will share the final total with you as soon as possible,” he said.

Staff here at the Yorkshire Evening Post also joined in the fundraising fun and raised around £130 on the day.

Wear Red Day coincided with the launch of our Have a Heart campaign which aims to help the Children's Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) reach its 2020 fundraising target of £1m.

All money raised supports the LGI unit to continue its life-saving work, treating children and adults with congenital heart disease.
