Leeds teen's thanks to burns team after devastating fire at family home

Becky Brown was left with 50 per cent burns following the devastating blaze at her family’s home in Leeds last summer.

The teenager spent a month in the Intensive Care Unit at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, before being transferred to the Children’s Regional Burns Unit to start rehabilitation.

“The biggest thing at first was the pain,” she said. “Everything really hurt and when they were encouraging me to do things I didn’t want to do them because of the pain but I knew I had to if I wanted to get better.

“Ann Sanderson, my physio, was great though. She never gave up on me, even when it took about an hour for me to get out of bed for the first time.

“I had several operations which saved my life and I am so grateful to everyone for that. I really wanted to do something to show how much I appreciate the nursing staff at the hospital.”

Becky completed the Leeds Half Marathon, raising £1,000 for the MY Burns Club and Children’s Regional Burns Unit.

Ann, specialist burns physiotherapist Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “I’m so proud of how she coped with her injuries, her positivity has amazed the team.”
