Leeds mum's heartache as nine-year-old son faces bone cancer surgery

Siobhon Delaney took son Kaiden Delaney-Lumb to A&E at Leeds General Infirmary on Friday March 13 the day after after a painful tennis ball sized lump appeared on his left shoulder blade.

Doctors told the devastated mum it was a suspected cancerous tumour and a biopsy later confirmed her worst fears.

Kaiden, of Old Farnley, was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer Ewing Sarcoma and has been undergoing chemotherapy sessions since April 3.

He is due to have surgery in early September to remove his left shoulder blade and the muscles attached to it.

The NHS is funding proton radiotherapy treatment due to take place in Essen, Germany, following the surgery.

Kaidens' family is fundraising to help pay travel costs and is also raising cash for Millys Smiles, a charity which gives out bags of essential items to children being treated in hospitals.

Mum-of-three Miss Delaney, 35, said the chemotherapy treatment is taking its toll on Kaiden.

She said: "He is tired, sick and gets mouth sores. He has lost a lot of weight.

"It's awful because he was a very active child and was full of energy. He liked to be out on is bike all the time.

"Now on very bad days he can hardly make it out of bed."

Miss Delaney said Kaiden's left arm will no longer function from the shoulder to the elbow after the surgery to remove his shoulder blade.

Miss Delaney has two other children - Kian, 11, and Charlotte, four - who mainly lived with her parents Aiden and Kerry during lockdown.

Mis Delaney said: "It is draining. I'm a single mum with three kids and I miss the other two when I'm in hospital.

"It is hard for them not being with their brother and seeing him so poorly and losing weight."

Miss Delaney's father Aiden, 64, also of Old Farnley, is raising money for Millys Smiles and to help his daughter with travel and accomodation costs for Kaiden's trip to Germany.

Mr Delaney, a retired comedian and singer - who worked in clubs, cruise ships and hotels - has teamed up with friends to record four songs on a CD on sale to help the appeal
