Runners around the region are invited to take part in a community 10K race that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Wakefield teacher Gemma Hinds describes The Wakefield Hospice 10k as “the Goldilocks of races – it’s not too big, not too small, it’s just right – and for a fantastic cause!”

She added: “Some local events are huge, and you just feel lost in a crowd, making it hard to relax and enjoy. Some are really small, and you can feel isolated and forgotten.

“The Wakefield Hospice 10k is great. I love that when you ring with a question, you speak to one of the fundraising team – when you email it’s to Jamie, the event organiser, not a generic inbox or voicemail.

“It has a real community feel to it, and the crowds that line the route are brilliant, mostly local residents.”

Gemma enjoys seeing her former pupils in the race, and other runners from clubs and parkruns etc.. She urges everyone to have a go, without any pressure.

Jamie Strachan, events fundraiser at Wakefield Hospice, said of the 10k race: “Last year, it raised over £70,000 for patient care, but it’s not all relatives of patients who take part. Gemma takes part because it is her local race and supports her local community.

“If you are a runner, and have never done the Wakefield Hospice 10k before, I encourage you to join us on Sunday, March 29. We’ve recently been voted the Best 10k road race in the North of the UK – so it’s not just us who think it’s a great event!”
