Leeds’ congenital heart unit is undoubtedly one of the city’s most treasured possessions.

It is there in a family’s hour of need, when loved ones are facing an unthinkable diagnosis involving a child.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has a proud history of throwing its weight behind the Leeds’ heart unit, dating back to the Save Our Surgery campaign when the city united to pull it back from the brink of closure.

And through our Have a Heart campaign, we now support the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund which supports the heart unit and families in need and is preparing for its flagship Wear Red Day fundraiser next month.

“Everyone just goes out of their way,” says mum Rachael O’Connell, whose son Elijah, three, had surgery to repair a hole in his heart at the unit.

Miracles are performed here.

We can all do our bit - something as simple as wearing red and donating - to ensure that those miracles, which have transformed, so many lives continue to happen.
