Leeds health bosses issue flu season warning as residents urged to get free winter vaccines
The UK Health Security Agency has reported signs that flu season could be starting earlier
People across Leeds are being urged to get their free winter vaccinations as health bosses warn flu season could have arrived earlier than expected this year.
Residents eligible for free flu and Covid-19 jabs are being encouraged to book their appointments as soon as possible by Leeds City Council.
Both viruses spread more easily during winter, when people spend more time indoors and in close contact with others.

They can cause serious illness, particularly among older people, pregnant women, young children and those with weakened immune systems or long-term health conditions.
Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious illness and hospital treatment, the council emphasised. Those who catch the viruses after being vaccinated are also more likely to experience milder symptoms and recover more quickly.
The call comes after the UK Health Security Agency reported signs that flu season could be starting earlier this year.
People can check whether they are eligible and book a free flu or Covid-19 vaccination through their GP, local pharmacy, NHS App or the national booking service.
Those eligible for both jabs may be able to have them during the same appointment.

From December 1, community clinics will also be available at participating pharmacies for children from reception to Year 11 who miss their school vaccination sessions.
A new national programme will also see NHS teams working with charity partners to offer flu and pneumococcal vaccinations to people sleeping rough or staying in homeless hostels and night shelters.
RSV vaccinations are also available for pregnant women and adults aged 75 to 79 to help prevent serious respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia and bronchiolitis.
Councillor Emma Flint, Leeds City Council’s executive member for equalities, adults and health, said: “National figures show last winter, the flu vaccination programme prevented an estimated 100,000 hospital admissions and 7,000 deaths – so if you are eligible, don’t put it off.
“Protection from previous vaccinations diminishes over time and viruses can change each year, making annual vaccinations essential for those who are vulnerable.
“Nobody wants to miss out on festive celebrations with their families and friends this winter and these vaccines provide the best possible protection.”
Victoria Eaton, Leeds City Council’s director of public health, said: “The advice is simple: if you’re eligible for a vaccination, please don’t wait to book your appointment.
“With the early signs that the flu season may be starting sooner this year, it’s vital that people take up the vaccination offer and protect themselves sooner rather than later.
“Vaccinations provide the best way to guard against serious illness and complications and also help ease demand on NHS and social care services during the busy winter period.”
People can check their eligibility and find out how to book their vaccinations on the NHS website.
