The changes mean people in Sheffield and South Yorkshire will no longer be able to mix households in private gardens and pubs, casinos, betting shops and gyms will all have to close. Restaurants and pubs which 'predominantly serve food' will be allowed to remain open.

But what do the changes mean for Leeds and how do they affect Leeds residents?

Leeds is in West Yorkshire, not South Yorkshire, so the Tier 3 lockdown does not affect Leeds yet.

Although it is worth noting that West Yorkshire council leaders remain in discussions with the government about a possible move into Tier 3 in the future, so just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it couldn't in the near future.

The Tier 3 rules in South Yorkshire in full are:

Tier 3 restrictions mean that pubs, bars, gyms, casinos and adult gaming centres must be immediately shut - on top of all the Tier 2 rules remaining in place.

- The exception is that restaurants, and pubs serving 'predominantly food' can remain open.

- Household mixing remains banned and mixing in private gardens is also banned as well

- Only some public spaces such as parks and beaches allow household mixing, and then the rule of six must still be followed

This means that:

- Leeds residents cannot visit family in South Yorkshire inside their household or even inside a private garden

- Leeds residents CAN travel to South Yorkshire, for example for work

- Leeds residents can travel to South Yorkshire to mix households in open public spaces such as a field, but it is advised against

- Leeds residents can travel to South Yorkshire for education, youth services or to care for someone

- Leeds residents should not stay overnight in South Yorkshire, although it is not illegal - merely advised against

- The government advice says: "You should try to avoid travelling outside the very high alert level area you are in or entering a very high alert level area, other than for things like work, education or youth services, to meet caring responsibilities or if you are travelling through as part of a longer journey.

"You should avoid staying overnight in another part of the UK if you are resident in a very high alert level area, or avoid staying overnight in a very high alert level area if you are resident elsewhere."

What are the fines for breaking local lockdown Tier 2 or Tier 3?Meeting in larger groups is against the law. The police can take action against you if you meet in larger groups. This includes breaking up illegal gatherings and issuing fines (fixed penalty notices).

You can be fined £200 for the first offence, doubling for further offences up to a maximum of £6,400. If you hold, or are involved in holding, an illegal gathering of over 30 people, the police can issue fines of £10,000.

If you live in a high alert level area you also cannot meet indoors with people outside of the area, unless exceptions apply.
