Despite the rising Covid-19 death rate across England, the weekly rate of new Covid deaths at Leeds hospitals remains relatively low compared to the peak of the pandemic, NHS England figures show.

Across England, the number of weekly registered coronavirus deaths has increased by a third in the space of seven days.

Some 438 deaths mentioning “novel coronavirus” were registered in England and Wales in the week ending October 9, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

This is a rise of 36% (117 deaths) from the previous week – which saw the highest number of deaths involving Covid-19 since early July.

The number of coronavirus cases in each area of the UK

NHS England figures show that 355 people have now died at hospital in Leeds after being diagnosed with coronavirus.

There were 31 Covid-related deaths recorded in March, 220 deaths in April, 60 in May and 22 in June.

The death rate then slowed during July and August, when three coronavirus patients died over the two months.

Nine coronavirus deaths were recorded during September.
