St Gemma's Hospice Leeds head chef dies after contracting Covid-19

Tributes have been paid to the "much-loved" head chef at St Gemma's Hospice after he died following Covid-19 complications.

Melvin Williams, 53, died on Saturday, December 12, after catching the virus.

Mr Williams had worked for the Moortown-based hospice for 16 years and was described as a "real character" by chief executive Kerry Jackson.

A candle will be lit in the hospice for Mr Williams every day this week in his memory.

Ms Jackson said: "Melvin was a much-loved friend and colleague who was committed to providing a great catering service to patients, staff and visitors.

"We will remember him as a real character, proud of his Jamaican roots and always keen to prepare his favourite Caribbean food for colleagues at the Hospice.

"Melvin, 53, has been a part of the St Gemma's family for 16 years and understandably many of us are shocked and distraught.

"He will be greatly missed. On behalf of everyone at St Gemma's we have offered sincere condolences to Melvin's family and friends at this tragic time."
