The rest of the school, in Mount Pleasant Road, remains open.

Mark McKelvie, Principal of Pudsey Grangefield School said: "We have two confirmed cases in school, which are isolated cases and not linked.

"Following advice from Public Health England, we identified everyone that had significant contact with both of these cases and those affected are being asked to remain at home and self-isolate.

"We also contacted Leeds City Council’s Health and Safety Team who have confirmed that we are following the latest national guidance and commended the multiple systems (such as hand sanitisers outside every classroom, staggered timetables, and the wearing of face masks in busy corridors) that we have put in place.

"The safety and wellbeing of our whole school community is our top priority and we do understand the concerns that some parents have regarding students returning to school.

"We encourage parents to contact their child’s Year Leader to discuss any concerns directly so that we can work together to resolve them.

"Although schools are legally allowed to fine parents whose children are persistently absent from school, this is not something that we resort to often and have no plans to do so regarding Covid concerns.”

Pudsey Grangefield School serves around 1,185 pupils.

It also runs a sixth form in partnership with Crawshaw Academy and Co-op Academy Priesthorpe.
