"Pretty sure they are not two metres apart!": Video shows rats enjoying lockdown freedom outside Leeds McDonald's

A herd of mountain goats have reclaimed the town of Llandudno in Wales, while a herd of deer have made their home on a housing estate in east London.

And Leeds is no exception, though the creatures involved aren't quite as cuddly.

Craig Stevens captured video of around ten rats running around outside the McDonalds in Kirkstall Road on Wednesday night.

Rats are often to be seen in the area around the Cardigan Fields complex, as it is close to the canal and River Aire, as well as there being many food businesses.

They are intelligent and social animals, but are also well-known carriers of many diseases.

The footage provoked a mixed reaction when Craig posted the footage on Leedsface.

One horrified woman said: "My worst nightmare. I said it would get worse with them because it's so quiet and there is no food wastage/litter about so they are more likely to come out looking for it."

Others joked that they were enjoying lockdown.

"Let’s just let them enjoy the Big Macs whilst we can’t," said one.

While another joked: "Someone call the police! That’s a proper gathering and I doubt they are all from the same family!"

Many pointed out that rats are simply a part of everyday city life.

One commenter said: "We’re a massive city. There’s rats everywhere, especially near water.

"You won’t find anywhere without them. When the people are away, the rats will play. They look like they’re having a blast!"

And another said: "I do not understand why people are so disgusted. Rats are part of our natural wildlife.

"They are not in any buildings - they are quite happy being out in the warm evening air.

"In fact because of the coronavirus humans are spreading and should be on lockdown. They are enjoying their freedom while they have it.

"I think it is wonderful to see wildlife out and about."
