The school identified everyone who had contact with the individual and the rest of the class who attended are now self isolating and will not attend before September 24, the Yorkshire Evening Post understands.

In a statement provided to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Elaine Silson, Headteacher of Allerton High School said: “As a large secondary school with over 1400 students, it was always likely that we would have a positive case when students returned this term, and we were fully prepared for this.

“A student developed symptoms after attending on their first day back; only one year group was in school at the time.

"The student immediately self-isolated, arranged a test and informed the school that the outcome was positive.

“Following the robust procedures that we have put in place as a result of our comprehensive risk assessment and planning, we were quickly able to identify everyone who had had significant contact with this student.

"Those students continue to self-isolate.

“The safety and wellbeing of our whole school community continues to be our main priority, and we are grateful to students and parents/carers for their ongoing support.”
