A popular family run bar and restaurant in West Yorkshire has closed after 34 years - after announcing coronavirus had proven 'too much' for the business.

The New Wheatsheaf in Castleford - a family owned and run bar and restaurant, with 'a strong belief in using the freshest local produce' - announced the news in a post on their Facebook page.

Grant, Gilly, Colin and Carol Ackroyd said they had battled 'strikes, recessions and depressions' but will now close due to the virus.

The family thanked their loyal customers for supporting them for over 'three decades'.

The post read: "Well after 34 years the New Wheatsheaf has had to close it’s doors, we managed to battle strikes, recessions and depressions but this Corona virus has proven too much for us, we would like to thank all our loyal customers and staff for supporting us for over 3 decades.

"We will still be serving our Sunday carveries from Greywood Hall for the near future and hope you will all continue to support us as you always have.

"Keep safe and thank you all.

"Grant, Gilly, Colin and Carol Ackroyd."

Social media users left more than 1,000 messages of support on the Facebook page.

One said: "I can't believe it.

"I am gutted, your food was amazing."

Another added: "Such sad news, I am so sorry."
