Minute's silence in Leeds to honour NHS heroes who have died in coronavirus pandemic

A minute's silence will be held across Leeds this morning to honour the NHS heroes who have died in the coronavirus pandemic.

At 11am, NHS staff will pay tribute to their colleagues across the country who have lost their lives to coronavirus.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has encouraged residents to join in with the minute's silence at home.

Tributes from local NHS trusts and loved ones have confirmed the deaths of 94 people working for the NHS since March 25.

Two frontline NHS nurses from Leeds are among those to have died from coronavirus.

Mental health nurse Khulisani (Khuli) Nkala, 46, died on April 17 after testing positive for Covid-19.

He had been working as a charge nurse in the forensic services at Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Josiane Zauma Ebonja Ekoli was an agency nurse who lived in Leeds and worked at Harrogate Hospital.

The mum-of-five died on April 13, aged 55.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust tweeted: "At 11am the NHS family will come together to pay tribute to all those across the health and care sector who have lost their lives to coronavirus.

"Please join in with the minute's silence if it is safe for you to do so, wherever you are at 11am."
