Major Covid outbreak at SLP College in Garforth as 78 cases confirmed

A major coronavirus spike in Leeds has been explained - as the Yorkshire Evening Post can reveal 78 confirmed cases at a dance college among both staff and students.

The coronavirus live map in Leeds showed a significant increase in Garforth on Tuesday - with a large number of recent new cases highlighted.

SLP College on Chapel Lane in Garforth has confirmed a total of 78 staff and students have tested positive for Covid-19.

According to their website, the college "welcome students from diverse national and international backgrounds that demonstrate a high level of potential and passion for the course offered."

The college claims it is "one of the UK’s leading training grounds for young artistic performing talent".

The vice-principal of the college, Lucie Kemp, told the Yorkshire Evening Post that they had been "extremely careful to follow Covid-19 secure guidance issued by the Government."

As soon as the college was aware of the positive cases, Public Health England was informed, the college said.

The college has been closed with effect from Friday, September 25.

It is reviewing existing procedures with the support of local health officials.

The full statement from vice-principal Lucie Kemp said: "SLP College has at all times been extremely careful to follow Covid-19 secure guidance issued by the Government.

"Despite this 78 people, staff and students, have tested positive for Covid-19. As soon as we were aware of positive cases, Public Health England were informed and we have been in daily contact since, the college was closed with effect from Friday 25th September 2020.

"We are reviewing all existing procedures with the support of local health officials who visited the college this week.

"We will remain closed until we are satisfied that any further action recommended is completed."
