Leeds University Covid cases: Number of staff and students with virus has halved this week

There were 43 positive test results among staff and students in the 10 days to November 22, down from 106 'active' cases the previous week.

The university releases weekly figures online in what it says is a 'bid to improve transparency' about transmission rates at the university.

The latest figures show that 21 people at the university tested positive for the virus between Monday November 16 and Sunday November 22.

Of those, 13 are students and eight are members of staff.

The figure has plummeted from the previous week when 69 people tested positive for the virus.

The university was later informed of an additional seven cases during this period bringing last week's total to 76.

It brings the total number of coronavirus cases confirmed since the start of term to 1,474.

The university, which is home to 38,000-plus students and 9,200-plus staff, publishes the figures weekly.

It comes after Leeds MPs sent a letter to the university calling on the institution to be more transparent when it comes to the risk posed by coronavirus to its staff and students, while also calling for an end to face-to-face teaching wherever possible.

There were 640 new cases of the virus recorded in the first week of term, but the number of new infections has dropped significantly in recent weeks.
