Leeds residents say a 'Big Thank You' to their coronavirus heroes

The messages are taken from the Leeds Big Thank You campaign website which encourages people to say thank you to all those currently working hard to keep us safe and also to maintain essential services.

They could be messages to anyone from local shopkeepers and supermarket staff, delivery drivers and postal workers, refuse collectors and cleaners, emergency services and health care staff, teachers and chefs, community groups and volunteers, as well as friends, family, carers and neighbours.

Since the new campaign was launched 10 days ago, more than 500 people have sent messages of appreciation for those involved in the city’s response to the pandemic.

Coun Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said “We are aware that many key workers still have to travel some distance to go out to work and many have to go through the city centre. When Clear Channel offered us the use of their digital screens, we thought it would be very special for them to see some of the messages of thanks that people have posted.

“We want to make sure that every single person who is going above and beyond during these extraordinary times knows how much we appreciate and value their work. And not just key workers, but all the volunteers, unpaid carers, neighbours or family members who are there for us when it matters the most – a Big Thank You to all of you.”

Chief Executive of Healthwatch Leeds, Hannah Davies, added: “There are so many people to be thankful for right now. From frontline NHS and care workers through to everyone working in care homes, unpaid carers, those offering essential homecare, all the community groups and volunteers through to those people keeping our city going whether it be the bin men, food delivery people, and those working in retail.

“There has never been a better time to recognise what a difference they are making so I’d urge everyone to say a ‘Big Thank You’ to them – just visit the website www.bigthankyouleeds.co.uk or use the hashtag #BigThanksLeeds on social media”
