But households will not be able to mix in leisure or hospitality venues.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that local lockdown areas - such as Leeds - will automatically move into high alert level, which is Tier 2.

Mr Johnson said that the change to the system is to make one unified system for local lockdowns across the country - the much anticipated 'traffic light' tier system.

Leeds and West Yorkshire is expected to fall into High Alert Level, Tier 2, as Mr Johnson said that areas in local lockdown will automatically move into Tier 2.

The infection rate in Leeds sits at just under 400 per 100,000 people - that is high nationally, but some areas are much higher.

Liverpool, where the infection rate is 598.5 per 100,000, is expected to be put into the toughest tier three measures.

Nottingham continues to have the highest rate in England, with 2,763 new cases recorded in the seven days to October 8 – the equivalent of 830.0 cases per 100,000 people.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out his three-tier strategy in a House of Commons Commons statement, with areas in England labelled as medium, high or very high risk, which will inform the “appropriate interventions” needed in each area.

He said: "We will now simplify and standardise our local rules by introducing a thee tier system of local Covid alert levels in England."

The PM said in 'high' Tier 2 areas the aim was "to reduce household to household transmission by preventing all mixing between different households or support bubbles indoors."

The rule of six continues to apply outdoors.

Retail, schools and universities will remain open nationwide.

Pub and bars will close in Tier three areas.

What is High Alert Tier 2 lockdown?

The High Alert Tier 2 rules in Leeds are:

- No household mixing indoors

- Mixing in gardens IS allowed as long as the rule of six is followed. This actually means that restrictions are slightly less strict than before.

- Curfew in bars and pubs remains at 10pm

- Pubs, bars and restaurants to stay open

- Social distancing must be obeyed at all times

- The Rule of Six remains so that groups of people must not exceed six people in pubs, bars, restaurants and gardens
