The changes, announced on Friday and effective as of 0.01am on Saturday morning, mean that household mixing is banned and this is enforceable by law. The Yorkshire Evening Post photographer James Hardisty headed into Leeds city centre to see how the city is looking on day one of local lockdown.

Masked shoppers took to the streets of Leeds as normal. Shops, bars, pubs and restaurants remain open, albeit with a 10pm curfew in line with national restrictions

There are suggestions that the local lockdown could continue through Christmas, but this has not yet been confirmed

The changes mean nobody is allowed inside any other household's home or garden, no matter what the size of the group or household

The changes were brought in to curb a rising infection rate - currently 113 at the time of writing, the highest Leeds has seen.
