Why Leeds is about to change how the UK thinks about maths

Leeds is about to do something no calculator ever could - make maths cool.

Sharpen your pencils and dig out your protractors as the city will become the UK’s first ever City of Maths.

As part of the two year celebration set to prove that numbers aren’t just for exam halls and tax returns but for creativity and fun.

Hosted exclusively in Leeds throughout 2026 and 2027, City of Maths is a pioneering initiative that will transform the city into a vibrant hub of mathematical discovery, play and community engagement.

The programme is aimed at everyone - young children, families, students, teachers, schools, businesses, and curious minds - and seeks to showcase how maths underpins everything, from art, sport, technology, and nature to everyday life.

“Maths isn’t just for ‘maths people’ - it’s for curious people,” said Ella Wild, project manager for City of Maths.

“Leeds is leading a national movement to celebrate maths as something joyful, creative, and deeply human.

“We’re ready to show the people of Leeds a different side to maths - one that everyone can connect with.”

Alongside a fun schedule of public activities, the City of Maths will work directly with schools across Leeds to support teachers, shift attitudes, and create engaged learners both inside and outside the classroom.

One of City of Maths’ landmark outcomes will be the creation of the UK’s first-ever Mathematical Playground - a permanent, interactive play space in a Leeds park, designed for families to explore mathematical ideas through play for generations to come.

Dr Katie Chicot, CEO of MathsWorldUK - the maths charity leading on delivery of the City of Maths programme -added: “Leeds has always been a city of innovation, imagination and collaboration.

“We’re thrilled that Leeds will be the trail-blazer for City of Maths. With our partners, community, and schools, we aim to show that mathematics belongs to everyone and it’s not just useful - it’s exciting, empowering, and a vital part of who we are.

“When people feel good about maths, they can do anything. Our hope is that, after seeing what’s possible here, other UK cities will want to step forward and host their own City of Maths.”
