The Let’s Read: LEEDS project, organised in partnership with The NEWS Foundation, sees hundreds of children at schools across the city receive a booklet of activities, copies of the YEP for six weeks and a certificate of achievement. Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland highlighted the Let’s Read: LEEDS scheme to the Education Secretary in the House of Commons.

Responding, Ms Greening said: “I do welcome that initiative.

“Whatever works to get children into reading should be encouraged.

“For some, it will be fantastic novels and books; for others, it will be an interest in what is happening around the world.”

Mr Mulholland said: “Let’s Read is an excellent scheme which I certainly welcome.

“I also commend The NEWS Foundation and Yorkshire Evening Post for starting it up, as well as parents and teachers who are supporting children taking part in it.

“Encouraging children to have an interest in current affairs when they are young will not only improve literacy rates, but also teach children to be engaged and aware citizens. I was pleased that the Education Secretary, Justine Greening MP, gave the scheme her support and I hope it will inspire other similar schemes to be set up around the country too.”
