The secondary school, which has more than 1,300 pupils, is already due to be rebuilt because of significant problems with its condition.

The new build was approved by the council's executive board this month and work is expected to start later this year, pending the outcome of a planning application.

Phil Mellen, deputy director of learning at Leeds City Council said: “The roof of the main building at Benton Park School has been badly damaged by high winds over the weekend.

“Contractors are on standby to assess the damage caused, but are unable to access the roof until the wind drops to a safe level.

“The school will remain closed until this assessment has taken place and we are satisfied that the building is safe for students and staff.

“We are working closely with the school to ensure that disruption for learners is kept to a minimum.”

Pupils at the school had been practising for a production of Sister Act and performances are scheduled for February 12 and February 14.

A worried parent asked the school on Twitter if the production would go ahead.

The school replied: "We will be making a decision on this later in the week.

"We will keep everyone informed. Students have worked so hard so whatever happens it will come to the stage at some point."
