How to apply as Leeds primary school applications open for September 2027
Applications can be made online
Primary school applications are now open in Leeds for September 2027.
Parents and carers of children due to start Reception in September 2027, or transferring to Year 3 at a junior school, can now apply for their preferred primary school place.
Applications can be made online, where you can also find information about different schools.
To give your child the best chance of getting a place at their school you prefer you should follow these steps. Here’s everything you need to know...
Deadline to apply
If your child was born between September 1, 2022 and August 31, 2023, then you can submit their application online via Leeds City Council’s website.
The deadline is January 15, 2027. If you submit your application after the deadline it could be treated with a lower priority than applications submitted on time.
When you will find out
Primary school offers day is April 16, 2027. If you applied through the online application portal, you will receive an email, during the working day, with your child's offer.
If you applied in any other way, you'll receive an offer letter to your registered home address (a few days after offer day).
Applying for a school outside your council area
If you live in Leeds you should submit your application via Leeds City Council even if you want to apply for a school outside of the city.
If you live outside Leeds and want to apply for a Leeds school, you should submit your application to your own local authority.
Children who have an EHCP
If your child has a current Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), you do not need to apply for a primary school place.
Your child’s EHCP will name the primary school they will go to in September.
Submitting a late application
Most Leeds schools will treat any applications submitted by February 12, 2027 as on time, while any submitted by February 28 will receive a lower priority than those submitted on time. Any submissions received on or after March 1, will not receive a school offer until May, after all other school places have been given out
If you have exceptional reasons why you could not submit your application by this date, you should contact council by email. Not receiving a reminder to apply is not an exceptional reason.
Find five schools to apply for
You should apply for five schools to give your child the best chance of getting a place at a school you want.
You'll need to list schools by preference when you apply. Schools do not know what preference you give them on your application. If a place is available at more than one school, we'll offer you the one highest on your list.
