Government watchdog praises Leeds secure children's home

Adel Beck secure children’s home, previously known as East Moor, was rated as outstanding following an inspection by Ofsted.

The home in north Leeds provides secure accommodation for young people aged between 10 and 17 who have either been remanded or sentenced to custody, or because of concerns about their welfare.

A newly-published report following an inspection earlier this year found that residents make ”exceptional progress” and the positive impact of living in the home can be “life changing”.

One young person told inspectors; “I wasn’t in a good place when I came here. I leave soon and feel as though I have a future.”

Staff were praised, with the report saying: “Staff are skilled at forming and maintaining strong, trusting relationships with young people, even in very challenging circumstances.”

Inspectors also found that young residents felt safe and protected, were well-prepared for their return to the community and the number achieving qualifications had improved significantly since the last inspection.

Coun Lisa Mulherin, Leeds City Council’s executive member for children and families said: “This is a fantastic achievement for everyone at Adel Beck.

“By working together and focusing on the young people as individuals, understanding their needs and building trust, the team at Adel Beck are really making a difference not just to the youngsters they work with, but for their families and the wider community. ”

Several recommendations were also made to further improve services and these are now being implemented at the home.
