With the Sixth Form having this year experienced its best results ever, it’s not surprising more and more students are choosing Pudsey Grammar School as their post-16 destination in and around Leeds.

As the only large school-based Sixth Form in the West of Leeds, it welcomes applications from students from all other schools.

Pudsey Grammar is already over-subscribed in lower years and has a rapidly growing Sixth Form, with more and more pupils choosing to return to study A-levels, having developed excellent relationships with staff and experienced the expert teaching which has delivered success at GCSE level.

It has also introduced the following:

1:1 Form Tutor Meetings – All Year 12 and Year 13 students have half-termly 1:1 meetings with their Form Tutors. These meetings focus on the most recent data capture from their trial assessments to address the student’s progress and set targets in preparation for the next assessments. Attendance, independent study and enrichment are also discussed, offering students the opportunity to address concerns, provide feedback and discuss long term goals.

Guest Speakers Programme – Through this, students attend in school talks and workshops delivered by experienced and influential individuals to gain an insight into their day-to-day work and career journey. Richard Bilton - Panorama journalist - has addressed students, representatives from the Mercedes F1 team have given an insight into engineering and Lisa Holdsworth - Chair of the Writer's Guild and Yorkshire Television society - has led seminars on scriptwriting and media careers.

“We are keen to give everyone the best possible chance of pursuing their chosen university or career after Sixth Form. These opportunities to meet the best professionals in their field are invaluable in giving students an insight into the world of work,” said Mr James Burkinshaw, Deputy Headteacher.

Oxford and Cambridge Support – The Sixth Form team liaises with Oxbridge contacts on a monthly basis to access opportunities for high achieving students. For example, the school has taken part in Cambridge University master classes and essay competitions. In September the Years 10 and 11 students not only visited Cambridge but the school also hosted an insight day in school, providing 1:1 application support to Y13 students, and super curricular workshops for Year 12 students.

Enrichment

The school expects its sixth formers to engage with several developmental opportunities outside of their timetabled lessons.

“We want to nurture confident, rounded young people and therefore we want them to engage with initiatives that take place outside their normal lessons. Doing so will build their skills and also enhance CVs and university application forms,” explained Mr Burkinshaw.

Sixth formers act as House Captains, organising a range of competitions across the school and encouraging the input of younger year groups. They have also participated in trips to Paris, to Oxford and Cambridge and Russell Group universities. A range of leadership opportunities are offered and students are supported in finding work experience, voluntary work and paid employment.

The ethos of the school is to foster relationships based on mutual respect, and Sixth Form students are very much treated as adults.

The prospectus says: “We have high expectations, as we prepare students for the increased independence of university, and for the demands of competitive employment. Equally, our teachers are friendly and approachable, and they work tirelessly to provide students with the support and expertise needed to flourish academically and personally.”
