A Leeds school which prides itself in giving young people their voice is holding a Family Fun Day on October 2nd, to allow prospective pupils and parents meet the teachers, support staff and pastoral team and tour the fabulous facilities.

Bishop Young Church of England Academy in East Leeds, is an 11-16 years school, where its vision to education, nurture and empower has been hugely influential in the five years since it opened.

The school has already earned itself a number of accolades, such as the Alliance Safeguarding Award, the Carnegie Mental Health Gold Status and the Barnardo’s Beacon School Award, but it is its work around oracy – the ability to express oneself fluently and grammatically in speech – that it has drawn most attention and praise.

Head of school Rachael Cole explained: “We are a Voice 21 partner school, and the work we have done has been featured in a Parliamentary Report as a case study of good practice. We believe in giving our pupils the vocabulary and spoken skills for life – if they don’t have them, reading and writing will not come easily.”

And making sure children are heard in every sense is at the core of this Church of England faith academy, which draws children in from around Leeds.

Ms Cole added: “We continually strive for excellence so that we prepare students not only for success whilst students at this academy but to sustain them for life after school.

“We have high expectations of all our students and aim to equip them with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence they need to progress and achieve success. We want them to develop a lifelong love of learning where they are motivated and stimulated by the world around them so that they can have a positive impact on their own life and the lives of others.

“Our students flourish in an environment which is welcoming, caring, calm, disciplined, inspiring and purposeful. The greatest strength of the academy is our focus on quality teaching and learning and our commitment to the learner, which enables progress and achievement at all levels.”

This year, the school has opened its Dovecote Resource Provision, which caters for autistic children with an EHCP, not only from Leeds but in all surrounding towns and cities.

The open day on Saturday, October 2nd, takes place at the school from 10am to 1pm. There’s no need to reserve a space, simply turn up to meet the teaching and support staff, hear from the Head Teacher, enjoy all the family fun day events like tombola, bouncy castles and more and find out for yourself why Bishop Young could be the perfect fit for your child. Whilst the open day will be particularly appealing to parents of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils, all of the family are welcome to attend, regardless of age.
