Norman Records to celebrate 30th birthday with a selection of anniversary exclusive vinyl
In an era of streaming and digital downloads, a Leeds-based independent icon is proving that physical music is very much alive and kicking as it hits a major milestone.
Norman Records is officially celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, marking three decades since it first launched as a small mail-order operation in 1996.
Over the last 30 years, the business has grown from a local start-up into one of the UK’s most respected independent online record shops, navigating the decline of CDs and the triumphant return of vinyl from their West Yorkshire base.
Reflecting on the shop’s journey, the team at Norman Records recalls their humble beginnings in a recent website post: "It's fair to say that had you been sat in a pub in Hyde Park in Leeds with Phil Leigh at the midpoint of the 1990s, just before he started printing out hand-made lists of records he had for sale to send to like-minded vinyl freaks, one or more of these records would have made it into the conversation."
Founder Phil, who launched the business in April 1996, credits the shop’s survival to its loyal community and a refusal to compromise on the ‘basics’ of independent retail.

Phil recalls the moment he decided to start the business: "I have to know what every record sounds like. What if it's good? What if it's not just good, what if it's the best thing ever? If it is, then I'm going to have to get it, right?!
"It was that mentality, 30 years ago, that made me start Norman Records, and it's that mentality that drives me today. There's still no feeling on earth like holding, and then listening to, a new record by an artist you love."
Although he started trading and "photocopying lists" around 1995 and 1996, the official 30th-anniversary celebration in 2026 marks the three-decade milestone of the brand's formal journey.
To celebrate, the Leeds stalwarts have announced a series of high-profile anniversary exclusives, including limited-edition vinyl from alternative icons like Pixies, Pavement, and Slint.
What are the Norman Records 30th anniversary exclusive vinyl on sale?

Reflecting on the selection, the team at Norman Records admits that their musical obsessions have remained remarkably consistent since the mid-90s: "Fast-forward thirty years and it's still basically the same.
“You could still, if you wanted to, find our Phil sitting in pubs in Leeds talking about Can and Pixies. And at this point we have to hold up our hands. So much has changed in music since 1996, and yet here we are still banging on about the Pixies."
To celebrate the records that "set them on their path," Norman Records has secured four strictly limited vinyl exclusives, available to order from today:
Pixies – Doolittle (Pearl Sunrise Vinyl)
The record that started it all. This alternative rock touchstone has been pressed on stunning Pearl Sunrise vinyl and is limited to 1,000 copies. It’s a fitting tribute to the band Phil and the team are still "banging on about" three decades later.
Slint – Spiderland (Yellow and Black Swirl Vinyl)
The 1991 post-rock masterpiece that defined the "Norman sound" for many early customers. This edition is limited to 500 copies and comes in a striking Yellow and Black Swirl finish.
Pavement – Slanted and Enchanted (Transparent Orange Vinyl)
The definitive lo-fi anthem of the 90s returns on Transparent Orange vinyl. With only 500 copies available, this pressing of the 1992 classic represents the "indie-obsessed" roots of the business.
Throbbing Gristle – 20 Jazz Funk Favourites (HOTHOL Pink Vinyl)
For the experimental fans, this legendary 1979 release has been reimagined on HOTHOL Pink vinyl. Limited to 500 copies, it represents the alternative edge that Norman Records has championed since its first photocopied lists.
For the ultimate fans, Norman Records is offering a special 30th Anniversary Bundle that includes all four of the announced exclusives, plus a major surprise. Grabbing the first four records (£90) will also include the mystery fifth exclusive, not yet revealed to the general public - and nor us.
For those who only have eyes for a specific artist, all four main exclusives are also available to buy individually while stocks last.
Additionally, the first 500 individual orders will receive a free bonus gift: an exclusive A5 postcard featuring randomly assigned anniversary designs.
