The closure of several Leeds restaurants, bars and shops have already been confirmed this year – some due to spiralling costs, while other owners have relocated or moved on to new ventures.
Here are eight businesses or branches confirmed to have closed in 2023.
7. Mr Whippy
Ice cream business Mr Whippy Leeds announced it will be leaving Roundhay Park last month as it downsizes the business. There have been Mr Whippy vans operating in the park for over 25 years and Leeds residents shared their sadness at the news. The team, who will still be attending event and weddings as normal, said: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank Leeds City Council, friends of Roundhay Park and everyone from the bottom of our hearts for your loyal custom and friendship over the past 25 years.” Photo: Yorkshire Post Newspapers
8. BrewDog Headingley
Craft beer chain BrewDog has confirmed the closure of one of its Leeds bars due to “increasing costs” and “spiralling bills”. The Scottish brewery and pub chain closed down its bar in Otley Road, Headingley, on February 22. There have been no job losses, however, as all staff have been relocated to BrewDog's North Street branch - which remains open as normal. Photo: Google
9. Chophaus
Upmarket Leeds steakhouse and grill Chophaus appears to have closed permanently. The Oakwood restaurant issued a brief statement on their website and social media this week and bookings are no longer being taken. It read: “We are now closed until further notice. Sorry for the inconvenience”. It is listed on the OpenTable website as being permanently closed. Photo: Jonathan Gawthorpe
