Members of the People Matters Community are being invited to take part in a series of free events aimed at raising awareness of electrical safety risks in the home.

The events will be hosted by People Matters at their base in LS3, as part of a wider electrical safety project funded through a grant from the Electrical Safety Fund, a major annual scheme, that help those most vulnerable to electrical injuries in their homes.

On Monday 9 February 2026 and Friday 13 February 2026, experienced electrician Martin Hoyles will deliver practical, easy-to-understand sessions focused on electrical safety in the home. The sessions will cover common electrical hazards, how to spot warning signs, and simple steps people can take to reduce risks and keep their households safe.

Following these sessions, the project will continue the next week with a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) session, delivered by a specialist testing company at the Belle Vue Road venue. Members will be encouraged to bring along small electrical items from home, such as kettles, lamps or chargers, to be safety-tested free of charge.

The aim of the project is to improve awareness of electrical safety, prevent avoidable accidents, and to give our members greater confidence in managing electrical risks in their homes.

The project is funded by a grant from the Electrical Safety Fund, a major annual scheme which helps those most vulnerable to electrical injuries in their homes.

Run by the national campaigning charity Electrical Safety First, the fund provides £500,000 to support more than 100 community projects around the UK which aim to reduce domestic electrical risks. Around half of all domestic fires in the UK are caused by electricity, with most of those arising from electrical products.

Samuel Terry, Policy and Research Manager at Electrical Safety First, says: “Aging and substandard products continually give rise to domestic safety hazards across the country, with many people struggling to afford replacements for common household items or opting to purchase cheaper, potentially dangerous alternatives.”

“We are pleased to support such a diverse range of projects to mitigate these risks. From PAT testing to creative displays of electrical safety information and awareness activities, the Electrical Safety Fund continues to lead our charitable mission of keeping people safe at home.”

All sessions are open to People Matters members, and spaces may be limited.
