Trinity Leeds and White Rose Shopping Centre issue statement ahead of mandatory mask regulations

People will need to wear a face covering in shopping centres, banks, takeaway outlets, sandwich shops and supermarkets by law when the Government regulations come into force.

Face coverings will also be mandatory in railway stations and airports under the regulations which are enforceable by police.

In a joint statement, Trinity Leeds and White Rose Shopping Centre said face coverings are mandatory inside all stores and shoppers are 'strongly encouraged' to wear one in all public places.

But it is not clear if customers will be turned away from shops if they are not wearing a face covering and do not have an exemption.

A spokesperson for Trinity Leeds and White Rose Shopping Centre said: “The safety of our staff and guests is our number one priority and we continue to be guided by Government advice.

"Guests will be required to wear face coverings in shops, and are strongly encouraged to wear one in all public places.”

Shoppers at Victoria Gate and the Victoria Quarter will be required to wear face coverings throughout the centres.

A spokesperson from Victoria Leeds, said: “In line with the updated guidance from the Government, face coverings are now compulsory throughout the centre, including in all our stores.”

The same exemptions as for public transport will apply to the regulations, with children under 11 and people with breathing problems not required to wear a covering.

Anyone who cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment or disability is also exempt.

The public are advised to wash their hands before putting a covering or mask on or taking it off, and to avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth while wearing one.
