Set up by former barrister Nisha Katona in 2014, Mowgli focuses on small street food items, as well as larger curry dishes.

Posting on social media last year, Nisha said Leeds was "a city I have hankered after for the last four years".

Mowgli already has restaurants in Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield, among other cities.

Choices include Goan fish curry, gunpowder chicken and Himalayan cheese toast, with dedicated gluten-free and vegan menus.

And there's even more reason for Leeds foodies to visit the Boar Lane outlet - Mowgli is participating in the Government's Eat Out to Help Out scheme throughout August, giving diners 50 per cent off.

Posting on social media on Monday, the opening night, Nisha said: "We open despite the challenges of keeping afloat with half full restaurants, despite the fact our city centres are tentatively tumbleweed.

"We must save jobs and blow life safely back into our cities.

"We are full of enthusiasm and full of healthy homespun flavour.

"All of you who booked and came and do book and do come - thankyou - you are saving our high streets and the economy with it.

"It does our souls good to see you carefully out and about. Wishing our little Leeds happy days ahead."

After opening, Nisha added: "I would never have dreamt that I would have such a beautiful gem.

"Celebrate we must - this is a green shoot of economic hope

"Heart melting right now."
