Clinton Cards reveals the future of its two Scarborough stores

Giant card and gift chain Clintons has closed its branch in Westborough - but has confirmed its store in the Brunswick Shopping Centre in Scarborough will re-open.

The store on the corner of Westborough and Aberdeen Walk has been cleared of stock and shelves dismantled.

Administrators of Clinton Cards announced plans to close 350 stores with the loss of nearly 3,000 jobs last month.

They said the business was "burdened with an untenable retail estate".

Asked about Scarborough, a spokesperson from Clintons said : “We’re pleased to confirm that our Brunswick shopping centre store will be opening as part of Clintons phased return to the high street when we look forward to welcoming customers back.

"In the case of the Westborough store, we have been reviewing the leases in our store portfolio following the sale of the business to Esquire Retail Limited in December 2019.

"In this case we were unable to agree commercial terms and we have been forced to take the difficult decision to close the store.

"Our staff have been informed and we will make every effort to redeploy staff members wherever possible.”

Outlets selling non-essential goods have been given the go-ahead to reopen - with social distancing and safety measures in place - from Monday June 15.
