It’s a dream scenario for many – run your own great traditional pub with good ale, fine food and great company on tap. And now the dream is set to come true for whoever takes over one of Leeds’ hidden gem traditional pubs.
Retirement plans by the current landlord of The New Masons Arms in Aberford Road, Oulton, means it has hit the market – and it’s a rare chance for a new owner to step in.
John Hemingway and wife Elaine have run The New Masons Arms for 16 years and lovingly developed it from a drinks-led cosy pub to one that combines good food, accommodation and regular events such as quiz nights.
It’s meant that while some sections of the traditional pub sector in the UK may have struggled in recent years, it has thrived – and is busier than ever.
Part of the attraction for customers is the pub’s impressive reputation for quality food – in particular, its homemade steak pie and fresh fish and ‘proper’ chips – which has racked up a 4.5-star rating on review site TripAdvisor.
While the pub’s accommodation which includes a twin, double and two single rooms, has been rated as “superb” and giving a 9.1 rank by Booking.com.
According to Mr Hemingway, the business’s success is largely down to its friendly staff and expert chefs who make use of the freshest local ingredients.
“Customers enjoy our good quality pub food which the chefs make using the freshest local ingredients.
“Food now makes up about 40 per cent of our business – we even attract customers from some of the nearby hotels who want to dine with us.”
The pub is located just five miles from the heart of Leeds and a stone’s throw from the Leeds-Wakefield road and oozes traditional character with cosy décor, natural brickwork and a well-stocked bar.
Behind the scenes is a professional kitchen and masses of storage space, including an outbuilding, plus private staff accommodation.
According to a spokesperson for Leeds-based business property specialists Ernest Wilson, the pub is a dream catch for whoever takes over.
“This has to be one of the most impressive public houses currently on the market and must be seen to be appreciated,” said the spokesperson.
“It has a super customer base, an enviable reputation and consistently posts very impressive net profits.
“This is a fantastic business which achieves a good income from wet sales, sensible food sales and the letting rooms which have a great following and are highly rated on various websites.”
